Lord and Lady Dalhousie extend a warm welcome to their home Brechin Castle at the ancient city of Brechin in the beautiful County of Angus in North East Scotland. Brechin Castle and the spectacular gardens are open to the public at set times each year.

Brechin Castle stands proud on a massive bluff of rocks above the River Southesk on the site of a much older fortress belonging to the Scottish kings. The present house was last reconstructed in the early 1700′s and incorporates parts of the original Castle dating back to the 13th century. The building has evolved from a defensive role to its present great house style.

Opening Times:
See the website for details of opening days and times.

Accessibility:
Brechin Castle has level access to both the house and garden, as well as accessible parking and drop-off points. However, access within the house itself is limited, as stairs are required to reach the first and second floors on our guided tours. The garden also has limited accessibility due to its sloped terrain.

The Bell Rock Lighthouse, off the coast of Angus, is the world’s oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse. It was built between 1807 and 1810 by Robert Stevenson on the Bell Rock (also known as Inchcape) in the North Sea, 11 miles (18km) east of the Firth of Tay. Standing 35 metres (115ft) tall, its light is visible from 35 statute miles (56km) inland.

The lighthouse operated in tandem with a shore station, the Bell Rock Signal Tower, built in 1813 at the mouth of Arbroath harbour. Today this building houses the Signal Tower Museum, a visitor centre detailing the history of the lighthouse.

According to legend, the rock is called Bell Rock because of a 14th-century attempt by the Abbot of Arbroath to install a warning bell on it. The bell lasted only one year before it was stolen by a Dutch pirate. This story is immortalised in “The Inchcape Rock”, a poem by 19th-century poet Robert Southey. The rock was the scene of many shipwrecks as it lies just below the surface of the sea for all but a few hours at low tide.

Boat trips are available from Arbroath Harbour to see the lighthouse.

Scurdie Ness is a headland located on the south side of the River South Esk, which leads from the North Sea into Montrose Harbour and then into Montrose Basin. The word Scurdie is a local word for the volcanic rock found there and Ness means headland.

Scurdie Ness lighthouse was built by David Stevenson and Thomas Stevenson and was lit for the first time on Tuesday 1 March 1870. During World War II the lighthouse was temporarily painted black.

Originally the light was fixed white but was changed to isophase white 60 seconds (i.e. light 30 seconds, eclipse 30 seconds) in 1907. The lighthouse was converted to automatic operation in 1987 and now displays 3 white flashes separated by 2.5 seconds and repeated every 20 seconds.

The road to Scurdie Ness Lighthouse is a popular walk and sightings of seals and dolphins are not unusual. Whales are sometimes seen in the area including rare sightings of humpback whales.

St Vigeans was likely an important Pictish religious centre, judging by the number and quality of the Pictish Christian carvings found on the 38 stones found in this small village.

The carved stones were dotted in and around the village church, which sits on a natural mound where a Pictish church or monastery may have once stood. Some stones were even incorporated into the walls of the late medieval church – and a few remain in place.

This is one of the most important collections of Pictish Christian stones. It includes the Drosten Stone, which carries a remarkable inscription and includes a hooded hunter and a squatting imp.

Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre is on the site of Britain’s first operational military airfield which was established by the Royal Flying Corps in February 1913.

Alongside a number of airplane exhibits the Heritage Centre aims to show the human side of the Air Stations history with a collection of contemporary photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. These not only tell of the history of the airfield but also the story of the men and women who served there and those who lived in the area. The Heritage Centre ensures that future generations will remember their service.

The Heritage Centre is organised and operated entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about restoration of aircraft and the history of the people who lived and worked at the Air Station.

With a commitment to bringing local history to life, the Heritage Centre allows visitors to become ‘hands-on’ with many opportunities to try on uniforms and touch the many exhibits.

Come along for a visit where you can see fantastic replica aircraft including a Sopwith Camel and Spitfire, as well as original aircraft including a Hawker Hunter and Tornado GR4. Find out about the men and women who served at the air station through their stories, photos and artefacts, and step back in time in the 1940s room, Station Commander’s office and Anderson Shelter.

Learn about “Vic”, Scotland’s war horse, in the Animals in War display. Try on uniforms, colour in pictures of aircraft or pretend to fly an aeroplane in the vintage flight trainer. Then why not take a load off and stop for a snack and a drink in the library.

Opening Times:
Thursday – 10am to 4pm
Friday – 10am to 4pm
Saturday – 10am to 4pm
Sunday – 12 noon to 4pm

Entry Fee:
