Arbroath Cliff Tours provides breathtaking adventure tours of Arbroath’s beautiful coastline and of the incredible cave network hidden deep underground. We currently offer kayaking, swimming, walking, sauna and meditation experiences.

Arbroath Cliff Tours is run by Cameron Smith, an Arbroath local who has spent 25 years exploring the cliffs between Arbroath and Auchmithie. Cameron has kayaked all over the world, is part of Arbroath’s RNLI Lifeboat crew, is an RNLI trained beach lifeguard and is Paddlesports & First Aid trained. He is passionate about writing music, climbing mountains, photography, reading and anything adventure.

Kayak Tour:

The Arbroath cliffs are one of the greatest kayaking locations in the whole of the UK. On our kayaking tour we explore multiple sea caves, land on secret underground beaches, look for ancient stalactites and explore interesting caverns full of sealife. On the coastline we keep our eyes peeled for bottlenose dolphins and seals, spot seabirds and hear stories from the time of Arbroath’s smuggling days.

Swim Tour:

Join us for a swim at the greatest swimming spot at the cliffs, Mermaid’s Kirk. Before our swim we will enjoy a short 30 minute walk along the cliffs to the beautiful Dickmont’s Den. Along the way we will view ‘The Needles Eye’, ‘Seaman’s Grave’, and ‘The Blowhole’. We will try locally roasted coffee, learn how the tides and swell work, learn of Arbroath’s interesting geology, spot seabirds (and hopefully dolphins) and hear tales of our smuggling days. After this we swim together through a magnificent cave tunnel.

Walking Tours:

There are currently 2 types of walking tours on offer.

  • Stalactite Cave Tour – The Stalactite Cave is a 300ft long seacave that fully fills up with water and can only be accessed on foot at certain times of the month. We have a short window of time to walk in and explore this incredible cave before the tide rises again.
  • The BIG Smokie Tour – The BIG Smokie tour takes you on a fun walking adventure from Arbroath to Auchmithie – home of the Arbroath Smokie. Here we will enjoy a hearty traditional Scottish meal together. We will see some stunning scenery such as ‘The Needle’s eye’, ‘Dickmont’s Den’ and ‘The Deils heid’. We will explore 3 large caves, lookout for dolphins and seabirds, learn how the tides and swell works, enjoy locally roasted coffee at our favourite picnic spot, watch videos of local cliff jumpers, hear tales from our infamous smuggling days and learn about Arbroath’s unique geology.

Meditation:

Discover the ultimate relaxation experience with our guided meditation soundbath in a cave, by the sea. Picture a candlelit cave where the aroma of incense mingles with the fresh sea air, the sound of the sea waves breaking nearby, accompanied by the mesmerising sounds from the crystal singing bowls.

Sauna:

Join us for a relaxing sauna by the sea. Our pop-up sauna tent will be erected in one of Angus’ beautiful coastal locations with Arbroath lighthouse museum beach and Auchmithie harbour being the most popular.

Safety Requirements:

We are passionate about providing an unforgettable experience while keeping our guests safe. Due to the nature of our adventure tours there are certain levels of fitness, experience and mobility needed to join one of our tours. Please check all the tour requirements before booking any experience to make sure that the experience is right for you.

Opening Times:

Open daily when the North Sea lets us adventure. Please check our website for availability.

As a well published poet and natural storyteller, David Wilkie of Bespoke Tours is more than capable of embracing many stories of Scotland, but in particular of Angus.

Its position offers such variety, from coast to glens that holds still hidden places and local true stories. Here in the Angus Glens there’s an abundance and variety that’s the equal of other places in Scotland as far too often our amazing area is bypassed.

Hence ‘Bespoke Tours’ was created and embraces Angus in many ways. As a natural storyteller, David has led international guests on tours around Scotland for other companies, and now leads his own bespoke guided tours to let the world see and know of and about Angus.

David also offers rare tours of Glenesk Folk Museum and the surrounding area. This is indeed a rare collaboration unlike any other. Learn more of the founder, Margaret Fairweather Michie, who’s dedication and vision created a remarkable collection of everyday items and stories of those who lived in the glen.

Should you require a tour that differs but is more ‘bespoke’ please don’t hesitate to get in touch. It will be a memorable tour and crafted around your interests if required.

A new venture, beginning and a journey unlike any other. Don’t imagine but experience today. Get in touch via phone or email to discuss your bespoke tour.

Testimonial:
“It has been a pleasure meeting you and being your first customers. We sincerely thank you (‘The Jock’) for your knowledge of Scotland and historical context. Further David, your kindness and sincerity ensured we had a wonderful vacation.”

Walk through 800 million years of Angus’ history guided by experienced geologists, and discover the stories of the stones.

Come and explore Seaton Cliffs Nature Reserve that sit between Arbroath and Auchmithie with Stories of Stone. The cliffs are cared for by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and highlights include spectacular geology; dramatic rock formations such as the Deil’s Heid; hidden coves; smugglers caves; seabird colonies; dolphins; butterflies; and wildflowers.

Join experienced geologists on a cliff top walking tour and delve into the fascinating world of local geology, geomorphology, and history. Experience a breathtaking coastal walk infused with rich narratives and deep insights into the land beneath your feet. Knowledgeable guides will ensure you have a memorable and educational journey through the last 800 million years of time.

The journey will begin at Whiting Ness car park – walk up the ramp to the top of the cliffs (the only hill on the walk) and head along the path to Carlingheugh Bay. Along the way you will rediscover the same awe-inspiring discoveries that first inspired James Hutton (widely known as the grandfather of geology) over 300 years ago.

See evidence of Himalayan scale mountains, continent sized rivers, volcanoes, and ice ages, and discover the human story and how we have been changing the landscape for hundreds of years, using and shaping the land to meet our needs.

Any Outlander fans will be able to walk in the footsteps of Jamie Fraser as you spy smuggling caves along the coast. There are stories of shipwrecks, ghostly bagpipers, and a quarry that built Scotland’s largest and wealthiest Abbey that gave birth to the Scottish Declaration of Independence.

Stop for a quick cuppa at Carlingheugh Bay, discussing how the innocent pebble can tell the story of many millions of years, before an easy amble back to the car park where there is time for a more general chat and discussion which takes you from Deep Time back to the present.

Tour groups are small with a maximum of 10 people each walk. The whole journey takes 2.5 hours and only general fitness is required. There are no descents down cliff faces as groups stay on the cliff top path the entire time. The walk is suitable for all ages however content is most suited to the over 12s. Children and dogs are welcome on the walk and should be supervised at all times.

The guides at Stories of Stone are experienced geologists who are local to Arbroath and have deep links to the cultural heritage of the area. Stories of Stone are proud members of the Scottish Geology Trust and give regular presentations to the public each year. Guides have experience in STEM mentoring of young people globally and are keen to inspire the next generation to care for Scotland’s heritage.

Designed with Georgian pride and baroque extravagance by renowned architect William Adam, House of Dun is every bit the perfect 18th-century laird’s home.

It took 13 years to complete and the precision shows in the fine details. Joseph Enzer’s plasterwork in the saloon is masterful – classical tableaux and family emblems rise thickly from the walls and ceilings with filigree flourishes. Throughout the house, hand-stitched woolwork and embroideries by Lady Augusta FitzClarence, daughter of William IV and actress Dorothy Jordan, are equally impressive.

Step back in time and be shown round the house by costumed characters. In the kitchen, see how the house was at the forefront of technology with a labour-saving clockwork spit to make work easier for the cook and her staff.

The recently renovated Courtyard, housing part of the Angus Folk Collection, uses innovative modes of display to show the stories of Angus.

Finally, step into the wildlife-rich outdoors, where beautiful formal gardens are surrounded by acres of Montrose woodland.

Visitors can also enjoy a bite to eat at Erskine’s Café at House of Dun, or enjoy an overnight stay at House of Dun’s self catering apartments.

If you’re looking for a wedding venue that combines timeless elegance with stunning natural beauty, the House of Dun is the perfect choice, with a variety of spaces to suit your wedding style, whether you want an intimate gathering or a large celebration.
