About This Event

Step back in time and earn your keep as a jute mill worker!

This workshop led by artist Renuka Ramanujam gives an insight into jute – a fibre that has had much historical impact locally in Angus and Scotland, as well as linking to Scotland’s colonial history.

The workshop will trace jute through its processing through a series of hands on making activities whilst being accompanied by its context at various points in history, looking at:

  • The involvement of the East India Company in growing the jute trade (including figures from Montrose!)
  • The industrialisation of jute processing and its impact on mills in both India and Dundee
  • The life and treatment of jute mill workers

Some of the making activities involved will be:

  • Turn raw fibres into cordage/rope
  • Weave your own jute patch
  • Print your own jute sack stamp design

No prior experience needed. Materials provided. Suitable for age 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).
