Glamis Castle is more than a family home and historic residence. The castle and village are the focus of a traditional rural estate which continues to encourage the development of a thriving rural community today.

Historically, the castle has been largely self-sufficient, with fruit and vegetables grown in the kitchen garden, as well as game, livestock, farming, and forestry on the estate. Staff and tradespeople have played a key role in sustaining the residents of Glamis from servants, cooks, gardeners, game keepers and foresters, to local farmers and merchants.

There are many interwoven strands involved in sustaining Glamis Castle and its estate from the past to the present, focusing not just on survival, but also quality of life, nature, and conservation. Further information and exhibits, including 17th century medicinal and culinary Recipes, Cellar Books, Game Books, lists of old trees, tradespeople’s accounts, and original 18th century clothing, can be found in the Coach House.

Access to our Exhibition is based on our Gardens and Grounds admission tickets: £9.50 per adult, £6.00 per child (5 – 16 years) and free for children under 5 or Castle, Gardens and Grounds admission tickets: £18.50 per adult, £11 per child (5 – 16 years) and free for children under 5.

This is a cottage garden 20 years in the making. Lots of art is incorporated and plenty of seating to catch the precious sun.

The garden is divided into four main areas: lawned with wall and borders; a pond area with abundant planting and greenhouse; a productive area with raised beds, fruit cage and a converted aviary; and finally a shaded garden spot to look to Red Castle.

The garden is about abundance and cultivated plants sit side-by-side with wild flowers, giving colour and interest for as much of the year as possible.

Visits can be arranged for Tuesdays and Sundays between 10am and 6pm, or Thursdays between 2pm and 6pm. Please phone 07485 609506 in advance.

For over two centuries, the towns of Kirriemuir and Forfar were powered by spinning, weaving, and textile production. From handwoven linen in cottages to industrial scale mills, the textile trade shaped every part of daily life.

In rural areas surrounding Forfar and Kirriemuir, small farmers cultivated flax, which their wives would spin. During the winter months, when agricultural work was limited, the farmers would weave these into cloth. These woven goods were brought to market towns for sale. This cottage industry was widespread until the advent of mechanised spinning and weaving which, over time, diminished the role of the home-based weaver.

As the towns transitioned from rural weaving communities into industrial centres, spinning and weaving became both a source of employment and a lens through which broader struggles – such as working-class rights, free trade, and industrial reform played out.

Visit the Meffan Museum and Art Gallery to see an exhibition by Kym Needle – A Sixty Year Circular Journey Making Pictures. Paintings by Kym Needle, Poetry by Henry Marsh.

Through a Western European tradition of painting, Kym Needle explores an essentially alien landscape and strive to come to terms with the European involvement with that landscape, whilst attempting to make significant the thousands of years of journeys that the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia have made.

Kym was born in Gawler, and raised on a small farm between Williamstown and Lyndoch, South Australia. He moved to Angus in August 2006 and currently works from a studio at home.

No booking is required to visit this exhibition, just drop in during museum opening hours.

Join us on a journey around the globe exploring how the story of Angus has been shaped by our relationship with the world.

Marvel at objects collected from almost every continent including iconic samurai armour, a beautifully embellished wall panel from the Imperial Palace in China, hand-crafted Fijian war clubs and the manuscripts of explorer and diplomat Alexander Burnes who almost, but not quite, changed the course of world history… These objects not only unlock rich stories of Angus people who travelled all over the world but also the impact they had on the people, cultures and ways of life they encountered as they did so.

Be part of our conversation to re-discover history by exploring the legacies of Empire and colonialism in our museum collections, our towns, and in our national identity. Question, learn and grow by exploring this forgotten aspect of our shared history.

No booking required – just drop in during museum opening hours.

Felicity Bristow was delighted to be awarded a Making History Residency which took place in June 2024, funded by Historic Environment Scotland and Craft Scotland, and based at Arbroath Abbey and Hospitalfield in Arbroath, Angus. This exhibition brings together work developed during an intensive period of research and making, following a week-long residency between the historic grounds of Hospitalfield and the Scriptorium studio within the Arbroath Abbey site.

The work on display has grown out of a layered process of material exploration, site-responsive research, and collaborative exchange. Drawing from time spent working in and around the Abbey and Hospitalfield and influenced by a series of six community workshops with Home-Start Angus—a local group offering support to parents-to-be and those caring for pre-school children—the process was as much about listening and observing as it was about making. Archival threads, shared stories, and hand-led experimentation all contribute to the textures and structures of the final pieces.

These works explore the interweaving of place, care, and memory including a personal exploration of new grief – as at that point Felicity had lost her Mother 6 months previously in tragic circumstances. Felicity was gathering personal found ‘fragments’ from the past and present, mainly through collecting plant materials, exploring their journeys and physically folding them into contemporary book forms that speak of nurturing, resilience, and connection. This residency continues to influence the direction of her practice, rooted in the lived experiences of the Arbroath community.

Contains depictions of joy, violence, colonisation, death and bureaucracy.

Sean Wai Keung is a performance maker and writer based in Glasgow.
