Step back in time and earn your keep as a jute mill worker!

This workshop led by artist Renuka Ramanujam gives an insight into jute – a fibre that has had much historical impact locally in Angus and Scotland, as well as linking to Scotland’s colonial history.

The workshop will trace jute through its processing through a series of hands on making activities whilst being accompanied by its context at various points in history, looking at:

  • The involvement of the East India Company in growing the jute trade (including figures from Montrose!)
  • The industrialisation of jute processing and its impact on mills in both India and Dundee
  • The life and treatment of jute mill workers

Some of the making activities involved will be:

  • Turn raw fibres into cordage/rope
  • Weave your own jute patch
  • Print your own jute sack stamp design

No prior experience needed. Materials provided. Suitable for age 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).

Book your ticket now.

Join us for a relaxing and creative evening of plant pot painting, ideal for groups of friends that want to try something a little different to either usual Friday night get togethers. Sip on chilled Prosecco, graze from a beautifully curated characuterie and cheese board and unwind as you bring your artistic touch to a terracotta pot.

Whether you’re a seasoned painter or just in for the laughs, all materials are provided – no experience necessary!

Choose from one large pot which you will paint then plant a daffodil bulb for a vibrant display next year or choose three small pots which you will design and paint then plant three types of herbs and take them home and pop them on your windowsill. All pots come with a saucer to paint too!

Make sure you have a lift arranged because you will be greeted with a glass of prosecco on arrival. The bar will be open for the rest of the evening offering delicious cocktails/mocktails and much more. Once you are halfway or so through your painting we will begin to put out the cheese and meat boards on the table.

It’s the perfect blend of creativity, conversation and celebration. Grab your spot, bring a friend (or a whole friend group!) and lets toast to a great friendship!

Book your space now.

Join artist Kelly Zhou for a participatory workshop that reflects the core ideas of her commission The Weight of Memory: Un-scrollable Histories.

Kelly will introduce her practice and the concept of the scroll that cannot be fully unrolled. She will share how memory, migration, and colonial legacies shape her work, using images from sketches and works-in-progress.

This will be followed by a short Q&A session.Participants will be invited(but not required) to take part in a collective memory exercise. Using rice paper, ink, and brushes, each person can create a small mark, symbol, or fragment that represents a memory, place, or moment in history that holds meaning for them. These contributions will be gathered and assembled into Kelly’s final piece. The process is not about producing a polished artwork, but about layering voices and memories—echoing the themes of silence, weight, and fragmentation.

Suitable for age 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).

Book your ticket now.
