Historically, the castle has been largely self-sufficient, with fruit and vegetables grown in the kitchen garden, as well as game, livestock, farming, and forestry on the estate. Staff and tradespeople have played a key role in sustaining the residents of Glamis from servants, cooks, gardeners, game keepers and foresters, to local farmers and merchants.

There are many interwoven strands involved in sustaining Glamis Castle and its estate from the past to the present, focusing not just on survival, but also quality of life, nature, and conservation. Further information and exhibits, including 17th century medicinal and culinary Recipes, Cellar Books, Game Books, lists of old trees, tradespeople’s accounts, and original 18th century clothing, can be found in the Coach House.

In rural areas surrounding Forfar and Kirriemuir, small farmers cultivated flax, which their wives would spin. During the winter months, when agricultural work was limited, the farmers would weave these into cloth. These woven goods were brought to market towns for sale. This cottage industry was widespread until the advent of mechanised spinning and weaving which, over time, diminished the role of the home-based weaver.

As the towns transitioned from rural weaving communities into industrial centres, spinning and weaving became both a source of employment and a lens through which broader struggles – such as working-class rights, free trade, and industrial reform played out.

Through a Western European tradition of painting, Kym Needle explores an essentially alien landscape and strive to come to terms with the European involvement with that landscape, whilst attempting to make significant the thousands of years of journeys that the Aboriginal Peoples of Australia have made.

Kym was born in Gawler, and raised on a small farm between Williamstown and Lyndoch, South Australia. He moved to Angus in August 2006 and currently works from a studio at home.

The work on display has grown out of a layered process of material exploration, site-responsive research, and collaborative exchange. Drawing from time spent working in and around the Abbey and Hospitalfield and influenced by a series of six community workshops with Home-Start Angus—a local group offering support to parents-to-be and those caring for pre-school children—the process was as much about listening and observing as it was about making. Archival threads, shared stories, and hand-led experimentation all contribute to the textures and structures of the final pieces.

These works explore the interweaving of place, care, and memory including a personal exploration of new grief – as at that point Felicity had lost her Mother 6 months previously in tragic circumstances. Felicity was gathering personal found ‘fragments’ from the past and present, mainly through collecting plant materials, exploring their journeys and physically folding them into contemporary book forms that speak of nurturing, resilience, and connection. This residency continues to influence the direction of her practice, rooted in the lived experiences of the Arbroath community.
