This stunning inland loch is set among the foothills of the Braes of Angus and close to the fertile farmlands of Strathmore.

Along with the larger Backwater Reservoir, Lintrathen supplies water to the towns of Angus, Dundee and north-east Perth & Kinross.

The Loch of Lintrathen attracts vast numbers of wintering wildfowl, best spotted between October and March. Whooper swans can also be seen during these months.

Visit between March and August to see the many breeding songbirds which make their home in the surrounding area.

The reserve is also home to tufted ducks, shovelers, great crested grebes, mallards, coots and herons.

There’s a nice circular trail running round the water and the opportunity to pick up the long distance Cateran Trail nearby.

Loch of Lintrathen is next to Bridgend of Lintrathen, seven miles west of Kirriemuir in Angus, just off the B951.

Some of the Reserve is privately owned and special permission is needed for access.

The Reekie Linn is a pair of joined waterfalls on the River Isla just north of Alyth at Bridge of Craigisla.

The River Isla flows south from the Cairngorms Mountains through Glen Isla before merging with the River Tay south of Dunkeld, and when it’s in spate the double-falls at the Reekie Linn become one massive, surging torrent.

The impressive waterfall is one of the most spectacular in Scotland. At the base of the waterfall is a dark cave called Black Dub, where legend has it that an outlaw once hid until the devil appeared before him in the form of a giant black dog. The outlaw was so scared that he turned himself in the next day.

The waterfall is very accessible and it is located in woodlands west of Forfar and Kirriemuir on the B954. There is a parking area immediately north of the bridge, with picnic tables and an information sign explaining about the geology of the area and the variety of bird life you can see there.

Please stay safe – the path to the waterfall passes close to the edge of a steep-sided gorge, and there are sheer drops of 150 feet down to the water below.

Note: location of the pin on Google Maps is a guide only.

A small loch in Angus, Loch Brandy is located nearly 610m (2,000 feet) above sea level on the western slopes of the Green Hill above Glen Clova.

Before you lies a deep pool of dark water snuggling in the curving arms of rock which rise up dramatically from the quiet shores. It’s a good spot for a paddle, but remember the water is deep in the middle and likely to be pretty chilly, even in the heat of the summer.

Loch Brandy is a superb example of a mountain corrie, backed by craggy slopes and cradling a perfect loch. Although it is relatively small, the fact it is a type of loch-hill makes it much more attractive, but the great thing is that the entire area around Loch Brandy creates a tremendous landscape.

It is said to be the only site in Scotland where a very rare and tiny water creature called the diatom is to be found. It is bright orange in colour.

Note: location of the pin on Google Maps is a guide only.

Take time out from the city to enjoy some peace and quiet at Balkello Community Woodland. Just a short trip from Dundee, it’s a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy sweeping views of the countryside, the city and the coast.

There’s an open grassy area, overlooking small ponds and a spring – ideal for a picnic. If you fancy a longer outing, Balkello is a gateway to the open Sidlaw Hills and on to Glamis.

Balkello’s trees were only planted in the 1990s, but already the young woodland is a real contrast to the open fields around it. Birds sing among the trees and light plays through the branches: come back often and see how the forest grows.

Balkello forest is off the B954 Muirhead to Newtyle road. At Auchterhouse, turn onto the road to Tealing. Go on for around 2½ miles (4km) and turn left for the forest car park. The car park is at grid reference NO 365 383.

The Den, Kirriemuir is a peaceful area of green space close to the centre of the town. It was opened in 1867 and extended later in the 19th century. It is situated in a small valley with the Gairie Burn running through. There is a bandstand, children’s play area and a public toilet.

The land in the south part of The Den was gifted by Sydney Wilkie to the town in 1867. Further land was acquired by the town with the final section being acquired from Kinnordy Estate. In 1908, the whole property was transferred to the Provost, Magistrate and Councillors of the Burgh of Kirriemuir on behalf of the community. It is now looked after by a group of dedicated volunteers from Kirriemuir Regeneration Group.

There are paths at various levels through The Den which show the Den from various directions.

The Den House, previously the park-keeper’s cottage sits in The Den beside the Gairie Burn. It is a two storey red sandstone building with gable ends; slated roof with chimneys at both ends. It is unoccupied at present and a variety of suggestions have been made as to its future use.

The Gairie Burn enters the Den at the northwest bringing water from Kinnordy Loch via the Muckle Drain into the Den. There is a waterfall at this end which can be quite spectacular when the burn is in spate. It is best viewed from the High Bridge near Lochmill.

The ‘Cuttle Well’ is a natural spring; this has recently been restored by the volunteers. It sits near to the High Bridge close by the waterfall.

Several small bridges cross the Gairie Burn along its length in the Den, giving access to the park from adjoining properties that stand on the heights above The Den.

Several footpaths give access to the Den from the town into the park from various directions. The principal of these is the access to Den Cottage from the Glengate. The main gate is located in Tannage Brae where there is a public car park opposite.

Public Toilets at Kirriemuir Den:
