East Haven is a small village located on the east coast of Scotland between Arbroath and Carnoustie, and is one of the oldest recorded fishing communities in Scotland.

Sustrans National Cycle Network 1 runs through the village and up the coast, making it arguably one of the most beautiful sections of the coastal network. East Haven is accessible on foot from either Carnoustie or Arbroath or by bike and by bus.

The pretty little bay at East Haven is popular with families and dog walkers. The bay is sandy and sits within a small natural harbour providing a safe area for children to play amongst the rock pools during low tide.

This is a rural beach with a diverse range of sealife and tidal seaweed. It is a popular area for children and adults to paddle and enjoy picnics on the beach during summer.

Carlingheugh Bay, (commonly known in Arbroath as The Flairs), is located to the north east of Arbroath at the northern end of the Seaton Cliffs Nature Trail.

Overlooked by red sandstone cliffs, the bay’s raised beach was once the site of a small settlement. At the head of the bay are remnants of an old boathouse and in former times the fisherwomen of nearby Auchmithie came here to collect seaweed.  At the southern end of the bay is a rock feature known as the Three Sisters.

There is a magnificent walk from the far end of Victoria Park in Arbroath along the cliff-top path to Auchmithie via The Flairs. The red sandstone formations by the shore are something to behold and with the sea and the various inlets and bits of beach on one side and the fields on the other it is simply beautiful. On a clear day you can see right out to the Bell Rock Lighthouse and the amount of birdlife around the cliffs is phenomenal.

Please be careful in high winds, particularly if there is a strong offshore wind, and stay away from the cliff edge.

Lunan Bay has attracted many visitors throughout the ages, from Viking armies in the 10th century to generations of holidaymakers. Today it offers a secluded haven on the dramatic Angus coastline.

This stunning east-facing beach is backed by sand dunes and framed by low cliffs to the north and south. From its northern end at Boddin Point, located about three miles south of Montrose, Lunan Bay extends two miles south to Ethie Haven.

The crumbling ruin of Red Castle stands on elevated ground overlooking the Bay and dates from the 12th century. Originally built for King William (the Lion) of Scotland to defend against Viking invaders, all that remains of this once formidable fortified house is part of the 15th century rectangular tower and the curtain wall. Please note: Red Castle has restricted access – please abide by the safety fencing and warning signage.

The beach is a popular destination for surfers and horse riders. The beach and estuary is also a fantastic place to go bird watching. Gannets, Terns (5 species), Mergansers, Long-tailed Ducks, Geese (3 species), Scoter (4 species), Red-throated Divers, Fulmars, Gulls (8 species), Cormorants, and Shags can be spotted. Bottlenose Dolphins and an occasional Harbour Porpoise can also be seen in the Bay.

Access to the beach is found via the Lunan Bay car park via Lunan Farms. Lunan Bay can be found to the north of Inverkeilor on the A92 between Arbroath and Montrose, at the Hawkhill junction (56°39’27.1″N 2°31’48.5″W). Follow the road for 1 mile then take a slight left over cross roads at the C45 coastal road into Lunan Farms, along a private farm track and you’ll reach Lunan Bay car park. Proceed with caution at the Lunan Farms/C45 junction. This is also National Cycle Route 1 used by many cyclist and walkers. Drive at 10mph along the single farm track.

Public toilet facilities are available within Lunan Farm Shop.

There is disabled access from Lunan Bay car park via a boardwalk to a viewing platform overlooking the beach.

Opening Times:
Lunan Bay Car Park is closed overnight (please see signage upon entry for full details). Overnight parking is not permitted in the Lunan Bay Car Park.

There is a small campsite for tents, motorhomes and caravans at Lunan Bay (capacity 16 pitches).

Note: location of the pin on Google Maps is a guide only.

Auchmithie is a small village on the coast of Angus around three miles north east of Arbroath. The village itself stands above 120ft cliffs, while below them is an attractive pebble beach, an old harbour, and some fascinating rock architecture.

To the north, the beach is surrounded by sheer red sandstone cliffs. These are pierced by a number of rock arches and caves, the latter once making this a popular area for smugglers.

The south end of the bay is home to Auchmithie’s old harbour, above which a few small boats are pulled up on the shore.

The scenic beach is well worth a visit and can be reached via the Arbroath Coastal Path.

The golden sands of Montrose Beach stretch for three miles from Montrose to the North Esk River, with stunning views south to Scurdieness Lighthouse.

Montrose is a family beach with a handy promenade and car parking, plus shop and amusement centre. It also has a Seafront Splash play area for children, pools, pitch and putt and an ice cream parlour. The quirky Trail Pavilion, built in 1913, houses the public toilets, open at peak times.

There is a circular walk that heads along the length of the beach before returning via an inland route, visiting the fine North Water viaduct – now part of a cycle path. The walk begins from the car park at the Seafront Splash area. If the tide is sufficiently out, you can start by heading down the steps outside the pavilion onto the beach; at higher tides you can head north along the promenade.
