Designed with Georgian pride and baroque extravagance by renowned architect William Adam, House of Dun is every bit the perfect 18th-century laird’s home.

It took 13 years to complete and the precision shows in the fine details. Joseph Enzer’s plasterwork in the saloon is masterful – classical tableaux and family emblems rise thickly from the walls and ceilings with filigree flourishes. Throughout the house, hand-stitched woolwork and embroideries by Lady Augusta FitzClarence, daughter of William IV and actress Dorothy Jordan, are equally impressive.

Step back in time and be shown round the house by costumed characters. In the kitchen, see how the house was at the forefront of technology with a labour-saving clockwork spit to make work easier for the cook and her staff.

The recently renovated Courtyard, housing part of the Angus Folk Collection, uses innovative modes of display to show the stories of Angus.

Finally, step into the wildlife-rich outdoors, where beautiful formal gardens are surrounded by acres of Montrose woodland.

Visitors can also enjoy a bite to eat at Erskine’s Café at House of Dun, or enjoy an overnight stay at House of Dun’s self catering apartments.

If you’re looking for a wedding venue that combines timeless elegance with stunning natural beauty, the House of Dun is the perfect choice, with a variety of spaces to suit your wedding style, whether you want an intimate gathering or a large celebration.

Opening Times (House, Shop, Cafe, Gardens & Angus Folk Museum):

28 April to 28 September
Wednesday to Sunday, 10.30am to 4.30pm

The abbey grounds and visitor centre, including the exhibition, shop and toilets, are open. Due to access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure during high level masonry inspections, the internal spaces of the abbey remain closed. Find out more on the HES website.

The abbey was founded in 1178 by King William the Lion, who was buried here.

Read the Declaration of Arbroath in the abbey in which Scotland’s nobility proclaimed their independence from England around 1320. You can learn more about the famous declaration in the visitor centre.

Or listen to your voice in the sacristy, which has one of the longest echoes in the country.

Closed for lunch from 12.30pm to 1.30pm

1 April 2026 onwards:
Monday to Sunday – 10am to 4.30pm (last entry 3.45pm)
Closed for lunch from 12.30pm to 1.30pm

Entry:
Adult – £5.50
Concession – £4.50
Child (age 7 to 15) – £3.30

Accessibility:
The visitor centre has step-free access and a platform lift to the first floor. There are large viewing windows and a virtual reconstruction of the abbey with an induction loop. There are areas of low lighting. Audio-visual displays tell the story of the Declaration of Arbroath. Two of the films have subtitles; the others are silent.

A limited number of adult and children’s ear defenders are available at this site. Please ask a member of staff if you want to borrow them.

Most of the Abbey is relatively level with grass and gravel surfaces. The nave and cloister have step-free access. The sacristy has two stone steps down into it. The lower gatehouse range has an audio-visual display with ramped access. The abbot’s house displays are reached via a stone spiral stair on several levels with a handrail from the first floor. The ground floor is accessed down a narrow ramp. There is an adapted toilet on site.

See the venue access guide.

The present cathedral had its origin in the founding of the Diocese of Brechin by the appointment of Bishop Samson by King David I in the mid 12th century. A new church or alterations in the Norman style were made to an existing church and it was not until from about 1225 that the Culdees and their Prior were replaced by a chapter of Canons and a small Cathedral built in the Gothic style.

This, the present building, was completed over the next few centuries with the major work done in the 13th and 14th centuries. After the reformation the building was neglected but it is generally agreed that even greater damage was done during the reconstruction of 1806. At this time the chancel, being unused, had fallen into disrepair and side chapels were demolished. A ceiling was put in the nave and galleries formed to house more worshipers. This latter problem was resolved when the building was restored to almost its original state (1900-1902).

The cathedral was originally dedicated to the Holy Trinity and this is commemorated in the Coat of Arms of the town which has a gold shield with three red rays converging at a point near the base.

The Round Tower is one of only two of a kind in Scotland, dating from AD 1100.

There are some fine stained glass windows as well as some intriguing Pictish stones on display.
