Take time out from the city to enjoy some peace and quiet at Balkello Community Woodland. Just a short trip from Dundee, it’s a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy sweeping views of the countryside, the city and the coast.

There’s an open grassy area, overlooking small ponds and a spring – ideal for a picnic. If you fancy a longer outing, Balkello is a gateway to the open Sidlaw Hills and on to Glamis.

Balkello’s trees were only planted in the 1990s, but already the young woodland is a real contrast to the open fields around it. Birds sing among the trees and light plays through the branches: come back often and see how the forest grows.

Balkello forest is off the B954 Muirhead to Newtyle road. At Auchterhouse, turn onto the road to Tealing. Go on for around 2½ miles (4km) and turn left for the forest car park. The car park is at grid reference NO 365 383.

The Basin is part of the estuary of the South Esk forming a tidal basin near to the town of Montrose.

The nature reserve in this embayment is internationally important for pink-footed geese, red knot and common redshank and is nationally important for common shelduck, wigeon and common eider ducks. It is also popular with mute swans, oystercatchers and northern lapwings as well as smaller birds. Breeding birds are preyed on by peregrine falcons and sparrowhawks.

The visitor centre, run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, is accessible from the A92 road.

The swans give the Basin its old, more poetic name, the “Sea of Swans”.

The Montrose Basin was hit by a tsunami in 6100 BC, generated by the massive underwater Storegga Slide, in Norway. It was 70 feet (21 m) high when it hit the basin, with the waters travelling inland as far as Forfar.

There are some fantastic walks at Montrose Basin. Please note that walks on the reserve take place from different car parks. Please refer to the Scottish Wildlife Trust website for details.

Neverland was opened in 2010 as part of a project commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of J M Barrie, the novelist and playwright and creator of Peter Pan, who was born in the Scottish town of Kirriemuir.

The park lies on The Hill close to The Pavilion which Barrie gifted to the town. In the park you can find play equipment themed on Peter Pan, Captain Hook and a crocodile. There is also a Lost Boys hideout, pirate ship and an aerial slide.

Close to the Neverland Play Park is Kirriemuir Camera Obscura – one of only three in Scotland – housed in a purpose-designed turret room in the Barrie Pavilion on Kirrie Hill. It provides a fascinating glimpse of historic technology and striking views of the surrounding countryside.

Public Toilets at Kirriemuir Hill:
Monday to Sunday – 9am to 6pm

Situated just outside Carnoustie, Craigmill Den offers a quiet woodland walk with plenty for nature lovers to enjoy.

This area is a haven for wildlife and home to many species of birds, including Dippers, Grey Wagtails, Linnets, Tree Sparrows and Yellowhammers as well as more common garden birds such as Blackbird, Blue Tit, Chaffinch, Dunnock and Wren. In fact, more than 70 species of bird have been recorded in Craigmill Den.

On your walk through the den, you will pass the remains of a weir and then follow the Mill Lade, a channel that carried the swift current of water used to drive the mill wheel that was once part of Panbride Bleachfield.

We recommend your walk here is included as part of a longer route from Carnoustie or East Haven as parking is limited and the route through the den is relatively short.

Note: location of the pin on Google Maps is a guide only.

Situated in rural Angus, Paws n Run provides a fully fenced secure exercise field in Angus, to run, play and train your furry friends in safety.

Set within 1.5 acres, Paws n Run provide the ideal secure fully fenced retreat, overlooking the stunning Angus hills. Whether you are a trainer, professional dog walker, looking to socialise your puppy, to practice your recall or just have an anxious or reactive dog who needs peace and quiet, privacy and space to run, play, have fun and exercise without the worry of distractions or unexpected meetings, this is an ideal location for all.

The park has a fully enclosed car park big enough for several cars. Kohl’s Kabin has a small tuck shop of natural treats, first aid, tick removers, emergency contact information, and good quality poo bags for sale. A large field shelter (Saoirse’s shelter) within the field, has plenty of space for humans and dogs, to provide shelter from the elements when required.

Enjoy looking at the visitor photo boards which features photos of some of the stunning woofs who have used or still do use the park. The photo boards helped raise over £400 which Paws n Run donated to the SSPCA.

The field offers Arbour seating, fresh drinking water from the dog house, fresh cool running water from the hose, a splash pool for those hot summer days, a sand pit to dig and have fun in, apparatus for your dogs to climb and jump, a tunnel, tyres and lots and lots of safe space to run.

There are plenty of poo bins and even a supply of free emergency poo bags so that you are not caught short, if you run out.

The field is not divided up and has no livestock in surrounding fields, so it is ideal for reactive dogs. The field is lit up for winter nights and the car park is specifically designed to be a safety bubble, meaning your dogs are in a secure space to be unloaded from the vehicle, prior to entering the field, and essentially the field is covered 24/7 by CCTV for your security and safety.

Paws n Run look forward to welcoming you and your woof(s) for some great fun in a safe, secure and stunning countryside location.

Opened in 1969, Backwater Reservoir links with Lintrathen Reservoir, 2½ miles (4 km) to the south, and supplies water to almost 300,000 people in Dundee, the towns of Angus as well as Coupar Angus, Blairgowrie and the Carse of Gowrie.

The 800-m (2625-foot) long dam wall retains a man-made loch 2 miles (3 km) in length, containing approximately 25 million cubic metres (883 million cubic feet) of water.

The project was initiated by the Dundee Corporation Waterworks in 1964 and absorbed into the newly created East of Scotland Water Board in 1968, before final completion and the official opening by Queen Elizabeth II on 9 October 1969.

Scottish Water are the present owners and operators of the reservoir, following the amalgamation of the East of Scotland Water Authority with the West of Scotland and North of Scotland Water Authorities to form a single company.

Backwater Reservoir is located within Glen Isla. The reservoir can be reached by taking the B951 turn-off from the A93 (around 5 miles south of Spittal of Glenshee) to the north-west, or from the A926 at Kirriemuir to the south-east. The perimeter of the reservoir forms a popular walking route.
