Elephant Rock can be reached on foot just to the north of Boddin Point, Montrose.

It is a naturally formed coastal arch of volcanic rock nestling in a steep, secluded bay that has been shaped by the elements and closely resembles the shape of an elephants head and truck, hence the name!

This is a coastal walk with a difference, for it boasts the grave of a man who apparently died 19 years before he was even born. George James Ramsay is the man with the unusual distinction, imposed upon him after his death.

When he was buried in the tiny cliff-top cemetery just north of Boddin Point, an error was obviously made on the headstone. Beneath ‘In Memory of George James Ramsay’ the inscription on the sea-facing stone reads: ‘Born November 24, 1859, Died December 17, 1840’.

Kinpurney Tower is one of the most prominent landmarks in Angus. The monument is the remains of a hillfort, dating probably to the Iron Age (between about 800 BC and 500 AD). It comprises a single rampart and ditch enclosing a sub-oval area of 6.6ha on the summit of Kinpurney Hill.

The rampart and ditch are visible for most of the circuit, except on the south side where there is a natural steep slope, and in the west where there is a break for the single entrance. The rampart stands up to 2m high maximum, but is generally much lower, and the ditch is visible as a narrow terrace. A roofless tower, built in 1774 and used as an observatory, stands within the fort interior.

The monument is situated on top of Kinpurney Hill, which forms part of the Sidlaw Hills, at around 345m above sea level. The site has extensive views in all directions and is prominent in the surrounding landscape. The monument was first scheduled in 1972, but the documentation did not meet modern standards: the present amendment rectifies this.

Victoria Park is located on the south-east side of Arbroath and runs along the seashore between the town and Whiting Ness, which marks the south-west end of Seaton Cliffs.

The park was opened in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and it seems likely that the area was landscaped at that time.

Victoria Park is a natural amphitheatre and has hosted a number of large events.

There are stunning views from the two paths, which lead to the cliffs, out over the North Sea and as far as The Bell Rock Lighthouse on the horizon.

The wide sweep of King’s Drive allows for motorists to drive as far as the start of Seaton Cliffs and there is ample parking spaces along the promenade.

The loch is a nature reserve run by the RSPB, open daily from dawn to dusk.

This shallow loch is situated in a natural basin surrounded by farmland and attracts all types of wildlife. One favourite summer visitor is the osprey, but you’re just as likely to see otters, red squirrels and deer as wildfowl, not to mention butterflies and dragonflies aplenty.

The reserve is located 1 mile (1.6 km) west of Kirriemuir on the B951 to Glenisla road. Follow the tourist signs to The Glens, Alyth and Blairgowrie until you reach the Glenisla road. The reserve is on the right, a mile along the Glenisla road.

There are three hides that provide views overlooking different areas of the loch and a bird feeding station halfway between the Gullery and East hides, where many different types of woodland birds can be seen.

Loch of Kinnordy is a eutrophic loch which supports a number of rare species of wetland plants and migratory birds. There are internationally important numbers of greylag geese, with 1% of the Iceland population over-wintering at the site. Black-headed gulls, pink-footed geese, water rails and whooper swans occur in nationally important numbers, along with otters, red squirrels, butterflies and dragonflies.

The Battle of Dunnichen between the Picts and the Angles was fought on Saturday 20 May 685 AD and is one of the best recorded events in Dark Age Scotland. The Pictish army of Bridei son of Beli, king of Fortriu, faced that of his cousin Ecgfrith son of Oswiu, king of the Northumbrian Angles.

Some 14 years earlier, Ecgfrith had led a similar foray north of the Tweed, against Bridei’s predecessor Drust. Stephen the Priest, an English chronicler of the time, tells us: “The bestial Pictish peoples had a fierce contempt for subjection to the Saxon and threatened to throw off from themselves the yoke of servitude. They gathered together innumerable nations from every nook and corner of the north, like a swarm of ants in the summer, sweeping from their hills.”

The cairn was erected in 1985 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the battle.
